The beginning

PUAAN was established, after much planning and deliberation, by two enthusiastic alumni with the support of other alumni residing in NSW in 2007.

The initial informal discussion

The inaugural general meeting was held on 20 May 2007 at the Thornleigh Community Centre, with Mrs. GothamiIndikadahena, Consul General foSri Lanka in Sydney, herself an alumnus of Peradeniya University, as the chief guest. The meeting was attended by over 300 alumni from all faculties and all Sri Lankan communities – Sinhalese, Tamil, Muslim and Burgher – were well represented.The Association was registered as a non-profit organisation with the Department of Fair Trading in NSW.

PUAAN’s main objectives have been, but not limited to:

  • fellowship building and developing camaraderie amongst its members through social events;
  • supporting the university and students through contributions to infrastructure projects and offering studentships and scholarships; and
  • engage in matters of common interest to people of Sri Lankan origin living in Australia.

The respect and recognition PUAAN now fosters among a diverse and plural body of associations have been the defining feature of our unique character
